                                        Legislation

Ireland has one of the highest per capita destruction rates of pound dogs in Europe.  Figures from the Department of the Environment show that one in three dogs entering an Irish pound in 2010 died. More than 5,200 dogs were killed. These figures do not include the numbers destroyed by vets at the request of their owners or, worse, at the hands of owners.

Legislation can make a difference. By implementing the right legislation, we can help protect animals in Ireland.

The Dog Breeding Establishments and Welfare of Greyhounds Acts will represent a huge step towards the protection of dogs here. However, they must be properly enforced along with existing animal protection acts such as the Protection of Animals Act, 1911.  It is also important that new animal protection legislation is enacted as soon as possible.

Up to date, properly enforced legislation is needed to ensure the adequate protection of animals. The proposed new animal welfare act should include a duty of care of owners, which would ensure at least a minimum of care for companion animals.

ANVIL, with the help of our supporters, intends to raise the profile of animals both in the public and political arena.  We will also work to improve animal welfare legislation in this country to ensure the protection of all animals.
