                                        Getting involved_

Animals around Ireland need your help. You can make a difference.

                                        What can you do?

More legislation must be passed to ensure the safety of animals in Ireland.

We can make a difference by lobbying our political representatives. Please take a few minutes to email or write letters to your local:

                                        Help rescue centres

Animal rescue centres around Ireland do a tremendous amount of work. Many are run from the operators’ own homes and receive little or no financial support. Ways you can help:
                                        • Organise fundraising events such as pub quizzes, bag packing, bake-offs or school events
                                        • Purchase or offer to sell their annual calendars and Christmas cards
                                        • Volunteer – many animal rescuers work alone and would love volunteers to walk or groom their rescue animals
                                        • Consider adopting an animal from a rescue centre rather than buying it from a
                                        • breeder. If it’s a thoroughbred you’re after, rescue centres will have them

                                        Beware of battery puppy farms

Battery puppy farms do exist in Ireland and some treat animals appallingly.
                                        • When purchasing a pet, visit its home
                                        • Ask to see the mother and look at her condition (try to see both parents if possible)
                                        • If you think something’s amiss, don’t purchase your dog and report the breeder to An Garda Síochána

                                        Report animal cruelty

Animal cruelty is an act of violence or neglect to an animal. It can be unintentional or intentional.
                                        • Unintentional neglect can involve leaving animals tied up for excessive periods of time without food, water or shelter. It can usually be resolved easily through educating the pet owner
                                        • Intentional neglect is when someone knowingly deprives the animal of food, water, shelter or proper veterinary care. It can involve harming or torturing an animal
                                        • Having too many animals can also be a form of neglect. If a person’s home is overrun with animals and not cleaned properly, it can cause disease
If you witness either intentional or unintentional neglect, contact your local Garda station.
